What does responsible consumption look like in different European countries? While concepts such as Fair Trade, ethical consumption and sustainability are shared across borders, the way they are understood and put into practice can look very different depending on the local context. As part of the Consumo Justo project, we created a series of podcast videos to bring these perspectives together through conversations with people from five European countries.

The podcast series takes us to Latvia, France, Spain, Norway and Poland, with each episode introducing a different voice and perspective on responsible consumption. Rather than approaching the topic only through definitions and educational materials, the videos connect it with real experiences, local realities and the choices people make in their everyday lives. The five episodes feature Krista from Latvia, Lise from France, Arianna from Spain, Ivo from Norway and Wiktor from Poland.

Five countries, five perspectives

Responsible consumption is a broad topic. It can include thinking about where products come from, how they are produced, who is involved in their production, how much we consume and what happens to products after we no longer need them. Looking at the topic through different national perspectives makes it possible to move beyond general sustainability messages and explore how these questions connect with people's actual environments and experiences.

For youth workers, the podcast format can also be useful as an educational resource. Instead of starting a session with a presentation, an episode or selected part of a conversation can become a starting point for group reflection. Participants can compare what they hear with their own community, identify similarities and differences between countries, or discuss how responsible consumption is understood among young people around them.

The series can be particularly useful alongside activities on sustainable consumption, Fair Trade, environmental responsibility and everyday consumer choices. A facilitator could, for example, invite participants to watch one or several country perspectives and then explore questions such as: What challenges do we recognise from our own country? What seems different? Which ideas could work in our community? What influences our own decisions as consumers? In this way, the videos can complement a workshop without requiring an entirely new activity to be developed.

The five videos can be watched individually, so you can choose the perspective most relevant to your activity, or explore the complete series to compare experiences from across Europe.

The Consumo Justo podcasts are another resource that youth workers can bring directly into their activities. They can be used before a workshop to introduce a topic, during a session to bring another perspective into the room, or afterwards to encourage participants to continue exploring responsible consumption independently. Combined with the other Consumo Justo educational resources and activities, the series helps connect a European-level topic with the experiences and perspectives of people living in different local contexts.

Whether you are preparing a sustainability training, discussing responsible consumption with young people or simply looking for new perspectives to introduce into your youth work, the podcast series offers an easy way to listen, compare and start a conversation.
